Area
The area is definitely worth a visit!
The picturesque city of Harlingen with its many waterways is located on the west coast of the northern province of Friesland and is one of the oldest seaport towns in the Netherlands.
Elfsteden city
Harlingen is one of the eleven historical cities of Friesland. Tours that visit all eleven cities are organised every year.
11 Fountains
In 2018, as part of the 11 Fountains project, eleven acclaimed artists were invited to create a unique water feature for each of the eleven cities. The fountain in Harlingen is a very life-like sperm whale. As you walk from the beach to the South Pier, every so often you will hear the whale emit a noisy jet of seawater that rises two metres high.
The city
With its rich history, architecture and culture, Harlingen is a multifaceted city that has a lot to offer. Explore the city in your own way. Wander around and take in the sights of the inland ports, the old warehouses, the traditional facades and original streets.
Culture lovers will be in their element. The impressive monuments, the sculpture trail, the Het Hannemahuis Museum and the Harlingen pottery factory are all worth seeing.
The ports
The many ports in Harlingen include the Noorderhaven, the Zuiderhaven, the Seaport, the Willemshaven (home of the Het Brouwdok brewery which makes Harlingen beer), and, on the other side of the Tsjerk Hiddessluizen lock, the fishing port.
The Wadden Sea – a UNESCO World Heritage Site
There is also plenty of nature nearby. To the west, the city borders on the Wadden Sea, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mussel beds and sandbanks in the Wadden Sea are exposed twice a day at low tide and serve as a feeding ground for many birds. The Wadden Sea dike with its spectacular view of the sea is a wonderful place to walk or cycle. The beach is next to the South Pier.
Shops, terraces and restaurants
In the city centre there are lovely little shops and plenty of places to stop off for refreshments. Too many terraces to mention and restaurants that cater for every budget.
